Shared Stick: Stretch Without Dropping It
In pairs, students hold a stick between their palms without gripping it and do coordinated stretches while keeping it up. The challenge forces them to stretch slowly and pay attention to their partner.
How to play
- Partners face each other with a horizontal stick held only by open palms. Walk together 10 meters without dropping it (1 min).
- Side bend: without dropping the stick, both lean to the same side and hold 20 seconds per side (2 min).
- Quads and calves: with one hand on the stick as shared support, stretch the same leg at the same time (2 min).
- Switch partners for each stretch: hamstrings with the stick vertical between palms, both folding forward at the same pace (2 min).
- Return sticks to the cart in pairs, carrying them with one finger each (1 min).
Rules
- Don't grip the stick: hold it with your palm or a finger.
- Stretch without bouncing and without pain; say so when you reach your limit.
- If the stick drops, pick it up and repeat the stretch more slowly.
Variations
Easier
You may grip the stick with one hand.
Standard
Stick held with open palms.
Harder
Stick held with a single finger from each person.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: trunk and arm stretches with a standing partner beside them.
- Knee injury: replace the quad stretch with a shoulder stretch using the stick.
- Visual impairment: the partner calls out each position change and the pace.
Learning goals
- Stretch the main muscle groups in a controlled way.
- Match pace with a partner.
- Cool down with a small challenge.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Light plastic sticks drop less and make less noise. The usual mistake is rushing to save the stick: insist the slowest person sets the pace.
