Session Self-Assessment with Rubric
A session self-assessment with a simple 3–4-criteria rubric, where each student scores themselves, explains their score and sets an improvement goal. Students practice self-assessment, responsibility and reflecting on their own learning.
How to play
- Hand out (1 min): the teacher gives out the rubric with 3 or 4 criteria (for example, effort, technique, teamwork and following the rules) and 4 levels each.
- Explanation (1 min): read one criterion and its levels out loud so everyone understands how to use it.
- Self-scoring (3 min): each student marks their level for each criterion and writes one sentence explaining each mark.
- Improvement goal (2 min): write one specific goal for next class, for example keep a steady pace in the repeats.
- Turn in (1 min): hand the sheet to the teacher, who will review it and return it with a comment.
Rules
- Be honest: rate what actually happened in class.
- Back up each score with a specific example.
- Work individually and quietly.
- Sheets are private between the student and the teacher.
Variations
Easier
Two criteria with levels shown as faces.
Standard
Full rubric with 3 or 4 criteria and explanations.
Harder
Compare with previous self-assessments and write what has improved and what hasn't.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: sheet on a clipboard or an oral answer to the teacher.
- Autism or reading difficulties: a rubric with pictures and short sentences.
- Shyness: a private oral check-in with the teacher instead of writing, if preferred.
Learning goals
- Develop the ability to self-assess with clear criteria.
- Take responsibility for their own learning.
- Set specific, achievable improvement goals.
Equipment for a class of 25
- rubric sheets: 25
- pens: 25
Teacher tip
Use the same rubric throughout a unit so students can see their progress. If a self-assessment doesn't match what you observed, discuss it privately, never in front of the group.

More cool-downs for High School
5-5-5 Breathing with Visualization
A breathing technique where students inhale, hold and exhale for five counts each while picturing a peaceful place. It helps bring heart rate down and builds attention, calm and self-regulation.
5-Minute Breathing Mindfulness
A short, teacher-guided mindfulness practice focused on the breath and body sensations. It helps students bring their heart rate down at the end of class and builds attention, focus and emotional self-regulation.
Active Recovery Technique: 5-Min Easy Jog
Active recovery with 5 minutes of very easy jogging where the pace drops each minute until students are walking, followed by a pulse check. It brings the heart rate down gradually and helps students understand the cool-down.
Adductor and External Rotator Stretching
Adductor and hip external rotator stretches done seated, in a side lunge and lying down. They improve hip flexibility and help the legs recover after activities with lots of changes of direction.
Advanced Glutes and Piriformis Stretching
Advanced glute and piriformis stretches with full pigeon pose, a lying figure-4 stretch and a seated twist. They improve hip flexibility and help prevent lower-back and back-of-the-leg discomfort.
Alternate Nostril Breathing: Nadi Shodhana Pranayama
Alternate nostril breathing (nadi shodhana), a yoga technique where you breathe in through one nostril and out through the other, alternating sides. It helps students calm down after the lesson and improves focus.
