Sensory Walk Back: Five Signs from the Environment
A cool-down walk in silence around the school or activity site. Each student must spot five signs about the state of the environment (a natural sound, a man-made sound, a living thing, a piece of litter and something they would improve) and share them at the end.
How to play
- Explain the five signs to look for and ask students to walk silently, breathing through the nose (1 min).
- Slow walk in single file on a short route, stopping for 30 seconds every minute to look and listen (3 min).
- Last standing stop: three slow breaths while each student mentally reviews their five signs (2 min).
- In a circle, each student shares one of their five signs and the class picks the most doable improvement (2 min).
Rules
- Walk in silence until the final circle.
- Do not touch or pull up plants or disturb animals.
- Nobody leaves the group.
Variations
Easier
Look for only three signs and walk inside the schoolyard.
Standard
Five signs on a route around the neighborhood.
Harder
Log the signs with a photo on a phone for a class map.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: the student focuses on sounds, smells and textures.
- Limited mobility: the route is accessible and stops line up with rest areas.
- Autism: the student can wear noise-reducing headphones and share in writing.
Learning goals
- Bring the heart rate down actively after exercise.
- Build attention to the natural and urban environment.
- Identify sustainable improvements in the local area.
Teacher tip
Works very well after plogging, orienteering or a bike ride. You can collect the suggested improvements on a class board.
