Senior Showcase Piece (2): Tech Rehearsal and Transitions
Rehearsal session where each group finishes its piece and runs it with music, simple lighting, entrances, exits and spike marks. Students learn how a real tech rehearsal works.
How to play
- Review the project sheet and list what still needs creating (5 min).
- Create and set the missing sections, led by the rehearsal lead (15 min).
- Tech rehearsal: tape spike marks and run the piece, stopping only at music, light and entrance cues (12 min).
- Full run filmed on one group phone; watch it right away and pick two fixes (10 min).
- Update the project sheet and delete the video or upload it to the school folder (3 min).
Rules
- Film only with everyone's OK and for class use; nothing goes on social media.
- Videos go on the school platform, not personal phones, or get deleted at the end.
- Groups rehearse in marked zones so they don't overlap.
- Drink water and rest between full runs.
Variations
Easier
Tech rehearsal with music and entrances only.
Standard
Music, light, spike marks and a filmed run.
Harder
A full non-stop run where the group fixes mistakes live.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: set visual cues for each change (a director's gesture or a light).
- Blind or low-vision students: lay tactile marks with doubled tape and rehearse entrances with a partner.
- Students with a temporary injury: take the stage manager role and call cues from the side.
Learning goals
- Complete and set a group composition.
- Understand how a tech rehearsal works.
- Use video responsibly and privately to improve.
Equipment for a class of 25
- speaker: 2
- flashlights: 8
- phones: 5
- masking tape: 1
Teacher tip
If only one corner can be darkened, rotate groups through it in 3-minute slots. Groups tend to run the whole piece over and over; have them rehearse the transitions first.
