Self-Officiated Mini Meet: Plan the Schedule, Judges and Sheets
The class splits into committees to design a track and field mini meet, held next session without the teacher officiating. It builds event organization skills and rules knowledge.
How to play
- The brief: the meet will have a hurdles or sprint race, an adapted 4x100 relay, a jump and a throw with safe equipment. Form five committees: schedule, venues, officials, results and safety (4 min).
- Committee work: each one writes up its part on a card (time slots, venue map, officials roster, results sheet, safety plan) (12 min).
- Measuring practice: the officials committee practices measuring a jump and a throw with the tape and shows everyone else (6 min).
- Share-out: each committee presents its part in one minute and the class spots time or space conflicts (5 min).
- Close: lock in the final version and decide who keeps it until meet day (3 min).
Rules
- Everyone competes in two events and officiates at least one.
- No event is officiated by its own competitors.
- The safety committee has the final say on throwing areas.
- Decisions are made by consensus; if not, the class votes.
Variations
Easier
The teacher hands out a base schedule and committees fill it in.
Standard
Five committees design the whole meet.
Harder
Add a media committee that writes a recap and a mixed-team standings table.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: the results committee prepares large-print sheets and reads results aloud.
- Limited mobility: include a seated throw event open to everyone.
- Students lacking confidence: they pick their committee and get a specific role.
Learning goals
- Plan a sports event with times, spaces and people.
- Learn the roles of officials and organizers.
- Work in committees with clear responsibilities.
Equipment for a class of 25
- planning cards: 30
- competition sheets: 10
- measuring tape: 2
- cones: 20
Teacher tip
Have blank schedule and results templates ready so no one wastes time on formatting. The classic mistake is scheduling every event at once without enough officials: the schedule committee must cross-check with the officials committee.
