Self-Compassion After a Bad Game: Three Steps
After a competitive main activity, students practice a short three-step self-compassion meditation: notice the discomfort, remember that it happens to everyone and speak to themselves kindly. It helps them handle frustration over mistakes or losses without shutting down or blaming others.
How to play
- Seated in a wide circle, the teacher explains the difference between harsh self-criticism and self-compassion with a sports example (1 min).
- Each student recalls a mistake or frustrating moment from class and notices where they feel it in the body, taking three slow breaths (2 min).
- Step two: silently repeat «mistakes are part of learning; it happens to everyone» while stretching the neck and shoulders (1 min).
- Step three: with a hand on the chest, each student tells themselves what they would say to a teammate in the same spot (1 min).
- Optional share: anyone who wants to says which phrase helped and where else they could use it (2 min).
Rules
- No one has to describe their mistake out loud.
- Whatever is shared is received respectfully; no jokes.
- The hand on the chest is optional; students can just clasp their hands.
Variations
Easier
Do only steps one and three with a phrase provided by the teacher.
Standard
All three steps guided, using students' own phrases.
Harder
Each student writes their own self-compassion phrase and plans when to use it at their next competition or test.
Adaptations
- Autism: give the three phrases in writing so the student can read them instead of imagining them.
- Hearing impairment: show the three steps on a whiteboard or on visible cards.
- Students very upset by a loss: they can stay with the breathing only and talk to the teacher afterward.
Learning goals
- Recognize the emotions tied to mistakes and losing.
- Use a self-compassion technique to manage frustration.
- Build a fair-play climate where making mistakes is OK.
Teacher tip
Use it right after tournaments or scored games. Don't turn it into a therapy session: if you notice strong distress, talk privately afterward.
