Schoolyard Padel: Let the Wall Play
Adapted padel where the schoolyard wall acts as the back glass. Students learn to let the ball go by, wait for it to come off the wall and return it, the move that most sets padel apart from tennis.
How to play
- Courts set against a flat wall, net about six meters out; explain: the ball bounces on the ground, may hit the wall and is played after (3 min).
- In pairs, one tosses so the ball bounces and goes into the wall; the other turns, waits for the rebound and hits softly over the net (8 min).
- Same on the backhand, with the outside foot toward the wall to make room (6 min).
- Short doubles games where a point won after playing the wall counts double (10 min).
- Share: what's harder, judging the distance or waiting without rushing (3 min).
Rules
- The ball may only hit the wall after bouncing on the ground; if it hits your back wall first, the point goes to the opponents.
- Whoever plays off the wall keeps at least half a meter from it so the racket never hits it.
- Doubles partners call "yours" or "mine" out loud to avoid collisions.
Variations
Easier
Partner tosses by hand and you hit after the rebound.
Standard
Doubles with the wall rule and double points.
Harder
On the first shot of each point you may only return after playing the wall.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: larger, brightly colored ball, and the partner calls "wall" on the rebound.
- Wheelchair users: two bounces allowed, one before and one after the wall.
- Injured shoulder: play underhand shots only and skip serving.
Learning goals
- Read the ball's rebound off the wall.
- Position the body with room to hit after the rebound.
- Coordinate with a partner in doubles.
Equipment for a class of 25
- padel rackets: 16
- padel balls: 16
- portable nets: 4
- chalk: 2
Teacher tip
No padel rackets? Beach paddles and slightly worn tennis balls work. The typical mistake is crowding the wall: chalk a line a meter and a half out and ask everyone to stay in front of it.
