Schoolyard furniture workout
In groups, students design and complete a workout route using only features of the schoolyard and its surroundings: benches, stairs, low walls and railings. They learn to train safely and independently in urban spaces with no equipment, a useful skill for an active lifestyle.
How to play
- Walk the class through the allowed features of the schoolyard and point out the ones that are off-limits for safety (4 min).
- Form groups of four; each group gets task cards with ideas: bench step-ups, triceps dips, incline push-ups on a wall and stair runs (2 min).
- Each group picks six stations around the yard, chooses the exercise, time and an easier option, and writes it on the card (6 min).
- Groups complete their route: 40 seconds per station with an easy jog to the next; two rounds (12 min).
- In the second round, a different member leads each station and coaches form.
- Wrap-up: each group shares its best station and which park near home they could use for the same route (4 min).
Rules
- Use only teacher-approved features and check that they are stable and dry.
- No jumping down from heights and no climbing on railings.
- Respect anyone else using the space.
- Groups stay within sight of the teacher at all times.
Variations
Easier
Four 30-second stations and a single round with walking rest.
Standard
A six-station route designed by each group, two rounds.
Harder
Groups swap routes and each one must improve another group's route.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the group includes accessible stations such as wall push-ups or bench presses from the wheelchair.
- Autism: provide a map of the yard with numbered stations.
- Advanced level: harder versions such as feet-on-bench push-ups or controlled jump step-ups.
Learning goals
- Use features of the urban environment to train fitness.
- Design a safe and balanced workout route.
- See the local neighborhood as a place for active recreation.
Equipment for a class of 25
- task cards: 7
- stopwatch: 7
Teacher tip
Check the yard before class: loose benches or wet surfaces rule out stations. This is a great way to get students working out in local parks.
