Running Dictation Partners
A short text is posted on a wall far from the pairs: one partner runs to read it, memorizes a chunk, comes back and dictates it to the other, who writes it down. It combines repeated short runs with working memory, reading comprehension, spelling and clear communication.
How to play
- Post 6 copies of a 5-sentence text on a wall, for example about the benefits of exercise. Each pair sets up at a cone about 65 feet away with a blank worksheet and a pencil (2 min).
- One partner is the runner and the other is the writer. On the whistle, the runner goes to the wall, reads and memorizes as much as they can, comes back and dictates it to the writer.
- The runner goes back to the wall as often as needed. After each sentence, partners switch roles: the writer becomes the runner (8 min).
- When a pair finishes the whole text, they sit down and proofread it.
- Each pair takes its worksheet to the wall, compares and counts mistakes: the score is their time plus 10 seconds per error (3 min).
- Wrap up: share memory tricks you used, like repeating under your breath or focusing on key words (2 min).
Rules
- Runners can't take paper or a pencil to the wall.
- Dictate only at the cone; no shouting from the wall.
- The writer stays at the cone and doesn't go look at the text.
- Run along the side and slow down before the wall so you don't run into it.
Variations
Easier
Use very short sentences with simple words and move the wall closer.
Standard
A 5-sentence text about 65 feet away, with partners switching roles after every sentence.
Harder
Use a text in a world language or one with numbers and dates, and post it about 100 feet away.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student can always be the writer or cover a shorter distance to a copy posted closer.
- Visual impairment: use very large, high-contrast print, or have a reader at the wall who reads the text aloud to the runner.
- Reading level: give each pair a text at the right level, all with the same number of sentences.
Learning goals
- Memorize a text and pass it on orally with accuracy.
- Write from dictation with attention to spelling and punctuation.
- Complete repeated quick runs while managing effort.

Teacher tip
Space out the copies on the wall so runners don't crowd together. Work with the classroom teacher to pick a text from what the class is studying that week in reading, science or social studies.
