Ruler Drop: Reflexes, Sleep, and Alcohol
In pairs, students measure their reaction time with the ruler drop test, first focused and then distracted. They connect the results to fatigue, lack of sleep, and alcohol in sports and on the street.
How to play
- Baseline: one partner holds the ruler vertically by the top end; the other holds thumb and index finger open at the zero mark. Without warning, the ruler drops. Record the centimeters for three tries (5 min).
- Dual-task test: same, but while counting backward by 3s from 100. Record three more tries (5 min).
- Share-out: almost everyone catches later when distracted. Fatigue, too little sleep, and alcohol also slow the brain's reaction (5 min).
- «Catch the bandana» reaction game in pairs: one drops a bandana from shoulder height, and the other catches it before it hits the floor; then add a step to start (7 min).
- Wrap-up: three situations where slow reflexes are dangerous: on a bike or scooter, in a game, and crossing the street (3 min).
Rules
- Drop the ruler without warning and without fakes.
- Nobody compares their numbers with others publicly.
- In «catch the bandana», keep enough space between pairs to avoid collisions.
- Talk about alcohol in general; never ask about personal use.
Variations
Easier
Baseline and bandana game only.
Standard
Baseline, dual task, and game.
Harder
Add a third test after 1 minute of hard effort (burpees or high knees) to see if reaction time changes.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: use a sound cue (the partner claps on release) and talk about auditory reaction.
- Limited hand mobility: catch the ruler with a whole-hand grab or use a wider ruler.
- Students anxious about tests: record for themselves only and may choose not to share.
Learning goals
- Measure and compare reaction time under different conditions.
- Connect rest and alcohol use with performance and safety.
- Improve reaction speed with simple games.
Equipment for a class of 25
- 30 cm rulers: 15
- score sheets: 15
- pencils: 15
- bandanas: 15
Teacher tip
If you have no 30 cm rulers, any long ruler with markings works. Keep the focus on «the brain slows down», not on alcohol as something they already drink.
