Rulebook Cleanup: Answer to Put Away the Gear
Each team collects the session's gear, but before dropping each load in the storage room they have to read and answer a card about running-event rules. It tidies up the class, lowers intensity and reviews the rules.
How to play
- Assign tasks: each team of four takes one type of equipment (1 min).
- First trips: each trip to storage means drawing a card, reading it aloud and answering as a team before putting the gear away (2 min).
- Last trips: the team switches reader for every card and checks that nothing is left on the course (2 min).
- Go over the tricky answers with the teacher (2 min).
Rules
- Walk, don't run, while carrying equipment.
- Poles are carried upright, by two people if there are many.
- Answer as a team: everyone weighs in before deciding.
- If an answer is wrong, read the right one and move on, no penalty.
Variations
Easier
Cards with three multiple-choice answers.
Standard
Open-question cards with the answer on the back.
Harder
Each team writes a new card for next session.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: a teammate reads the card and they give the team's answer.
- Students with limited mobility: act as official reader and hold the cards.
- Students with reading difficulties: cards with pictograms and short sentences.
Learning goals
- Learn basic rules of running events.
- Help put away equipment.
- Wind down in an orderly way.
Equipment for a class of 25
- relay batons: 8
- cones: 30
- question cards: 12
Teacher tip
Sample cards: the 4x100 exchange zone is 30 m long; the baton can't be thrown; if dropped, the runner who had it picks it up; at senior level one false start means disqualification; knocking over a hurdle unintentionally isn't a disqualification. Common mistake: one student always answers for everyone; rotate who gives the answer.
