Rubric Ladder: Step Onto the Level That Fits You
Ladders of four hoops lie on the floor, one per assessment criterion, with a description for each level; each student steps into the hoop they think fits them and their partner confirms or challenges it. Self-assessment happens on the move and with reasons.
How to play
- Three ladders of four hoops on the floor, each labeled with a unit criterion. A card next to each hoop describes that level (1 min).
- In pairs, read the first ladder. Each person walks to the hoop that describes them, without cutting in front of anyone (2 min).
- The partner says whether they agree and gives an example from class; if not, they negotiate a hoop (2 min).
- Repeat on the other two ladders, walking from one to the next (3 min).
- Each student picks the criterion they want to improve and tells their partner while they collect the hoops (1 min).
Rules
- Rate the task, not the person.
- Chosen hoops aren't discussed in front of the whole group.
- Back up your choice with a specific example from class.
- No jumping between hoops; walk.
Variations
Easier
One ladder and three levels only.
Standard
Three four-level ladders with a partner who confirms.
Harder
Each pair writes a fifth level for one of the criteria.
Adaptations
- Visually impaired students: the partner reads the cards and walks with them to the hoop.
- Wheelchair users: space the hoops so each one can be reached.
- Students with low self-esteem: the teacher talks privately with anyone who always picks the lowest level.
Learning goals
- Assess your own performance with clear criteria.
- Support your rating with examples.
- Set a personal improvement goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 12
- cards: 12
Teacher tip
Use the unit's real criteria and write the levels in student-friendly language. Note which criterion each student wants to improve: it's useful for next class.
