Rope Circle Group Stand-Up
Sitting in a circle and holding a long rope tied into a loop, group members lean back together to stand up, sit down and move without losing balance. Students work on balance, shared strength and trust.
How to play
- Tie the ends of two long ropes to make two circles. Each group of 12 or 13 sits around one, knees bent and feet flat (2 min).
- Everyone holds the rope with both hands in front of the chest. On 'one, two, three, up!', all lean back at once and stand up (3 min).
- Going down is harder: with the rope tight, everyone sits slowly on a count of five. Repeat up and down five times (3 min).
- Standing with the rope tight, everyone leans back with straight arms, and the circle side-steps one full lap (3 min).
- Challenges: stand up on one foot, stand up without counting out loud, or have half the circle stand while the other half sits (3 min).
- Finish: both circles join into one big loop with both ropes tied together and try to stand up all at once (1 min).
Rules
- Hold the rope with both hands and never wrap it around your wrists.
- No one lets go suddenly: if you get tired, say so and the group stops.
- Go up and down only on the group count.
- Safety: feet go in front, and the circle is wide, with space behind everyone.
Variations
Easier
Groups of six with a shorter rope, standing up from kneeling.
Standard
Groups of 12 standing up and sitting down from the floor.
Harder
Stand up on one foot or with eyes closed.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student takes part from the wheelchair holding the rope, and the group balances the pull in that section.
- Autism or shyness: place the student between two trusted classmates; they may watch one round first.
- Fitness level: put students of similar strength across from each other to balance the circle.
Learning goals
- Keep balance while sharing weight with the group.
- Coordinate effort at the same moment.
- Trust that the group supports everyone.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 2
Teacher tip
If someone lets go early, the students across from them sit down hard, so stress saying something before letting go. Use a thick 50-foot rope per group for a comfortable grip.
