Rope Check-In: Inspect, Coil, and Return
The end-of-lesson cleanup after knot work: each pair inspects ropes and cords, coils them neatly, and hands them in while naming a real use for a knot they learned. It lowers arousal and teaches care for gear that safety depends on.
How to play
- Untie every knot, including ones forgotten at the ends (1 min).
- Inspect each rope by running its full length through your hands: cuts, frayed spots, stiff or melted sections (2 min).
- Coil: short cords in a hank between hand and elbow, finished with two wraps; long ropes in figure eights over the partner's shoulder (2 min).
- Hand-in in pairs: put the rope in the bin and say in one sentence a real use for one of today's knots; damaged ropes go in a separate pile (2 min).
Rules
- No rope is stored with knots in it.
- A damaged rope is never used to hold weight and gets set aside.
- Place ropes in the bin; don't throw them.
- Work standing or sitting, with no rope games.
Variations
Easier
Just inspect and hand in the short cords.
Standard
Inspect, coil, and hand in with the use sentence.
Harder
Partners check each other's hank, which must uncoil with no tangles.
Adaptations
- Low vision: inspect by touch, which is actually the best way to find damage.
- Limited use of one hand: coil with a partner or around a pole held on the ground.
- Students in a hurry to leave: be in charge of the bin and the final count.
Learning goals
- Cool down with a calm task.
- Spot damage in rope gear.
- Recall real uses of the knots learned.
Equipment for a class of 25
- short cords: 30
- ropes: 8
- gear bins: 2
Teacher tip
Keep a tag or colored tape handy to mark ropes that need checking or retiring. Common mistake: coiling by yanking around the elbow; the hank should stay loose and kink-free.
