Room Reset: Slow-Motion Desk Moving in Pairs
At the end of the lesson, pairs put desks and chairs back in slow motion, using correct lifting technique. It brings heart rates down while teaching students to protect their backs in an everyday task.
How to play
- Review technique: feet apart, knees bent, back straight, load close, no twisting with weight (1 min).
- In pairs, lift a desk together in slow motion and carry it back while quietly counting to ten (2 min).
- Place the chairs with the same technique, silently and without dragging (2 min).
- Review: each pair points out a moment when another pair used good technique (1 min).
Rules
- Desks are lifted by two people, never dragged.
- If it's too heavy, ask for help.
- No running or pushing while moving furniture.
- Stay quiet so you can coordinate with your partner.
Variations
Easier
Chairs only.
Standard
Desks and chairs in pairs in slow motion.
Harder
Reset the room without talking, using only eye contact and gestures.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: direct the setup by calling out where each row ends up.
- Back or arm injury: check pairs' technique instead of lifting.
- Hesitant students: pair up with someone they trust.
Learning goals
- Use safe technique to lift and carry loads.
- Wind down after the main activity.
- Help look after a shared space.
Teacher tip
Sketch the final layout on the board so there's no confusion. The most common mistake is bending the back instead of the knees when setting the desk down.
