Rock-Paper-Scissors Stretch-Off
Pairs play rock-paper-scissors: the winning sign picks the body area and the loser chooses and leads the stretch both partners do. It is a fun way to review stretches for each area and switch partners while staying calm.
How to play
- The teacher assigns an area to each sign: rock, legs; paper, arms and shoulders; scissors, trunk and back; and reviews two stretches for each area (1 min).
- Students pair up face to face and play rock-paper-scissors on three (0.5 min).
- The winning sign sets the area and the loser suggests a stretch for it; both hold it for 20 seconds while the winner counts softly (1 min).
- On a tie, both take a deep breath with arms overhead and play again (0.5 min).
- After three rounds, the teacher claps and everyone walks slowly to find a new partner; play three more rounds (3 min).
- With the final partner, each student names their favorite stretch of the day and does it one more time (2 min).
Rules
- No repeating a stretch already done with that partner.
- Hold the stretch for 20 seconds without bouncing.
- Safety: if a suggested stretch is uncomfortable, either partner can do an easier version.
Variations
Easier
The teacher hands out a card with two stretches per area so students only have to pick one.
Standard
Six rounds with two partners, with stretches chosen by the loser.
Harder
The loser must suggest a stretch that hasn't been used by anyone in the class yet.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays seated and the partner adapts leg stretches to a chair version.
- Hearing impairment: the rhythm of each round is set with three visible hand pumps instead of counting out loud.
- Fitness level: less flexible students use shorter-range versions and keep playing.
Learning goals
- Recall and suggest appropriate stretches for each body area.
- Lead a partner through a stretch with clear directions.
- Interact with different classmates in a calm setting.
Teacher tip
Post the sign-to-area chart on the wall to avoid arguments. If a pair speeds up, remind them the game is over when they've stretched, not when they've won.
