Rhythmic Breathing Jog: 3:3 and 2:2 Patterns
A continuous-running warm-up where students sync their breathing with their steps: breathe in for 3 foot strikes and out for 3, then 2 and 2 as the pace picks up. It teaches students to regulate warm-up intensity and prepare for aerobic work.
How to play
- Mark a loop of about 200 m around the field with cones and explain the count: every foot strike is one number.
- Brisk walk (1 min): breathe in for 4 steps and out for 4 to learn the count.
- 3:3 jog (3 min): comfortable pace, 3 steps breathing in and 3 breathing out; you should be able to say short sentences.
- Check (1 min): quick stop, everyone takes a 15-second pulse and multiplies by 4; it should be around 120–140 beats per minute.
- 2:2 jog (3 min): pick up the pace until 3:3 feels too long, then switch to 2:2.
- Finish (2 min): two 50 m build-ups, then walk to the work area back on the 3:3 pattern.
Rules
- Don't hold your breath: breathe out fully and actively.
- Anyone who feels dizzy or has chest pain walks and tells the teacher.
- Always pass on the outside of the loop.
- Everyone sets their own pace: it's not a race.
Variations
Easier
Do the whole block as a brisk walk with 4:4 and 3:3 patterns.
Standard
Jog at 3:3, then 2:2 as intensity rises.
Harder
Try a 3:2 pattern (in for 3, out for 2) so the exhale lands on alternating feet.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: push the wheelchair or do arm circles, syncing breathing with each push.
- Asthma: carry the inhaler, stay on the 3:3 pattern, and speak up at any sign of trouble.
- Visual impairment: run with a guide connected by a short tether and count out loud together.
Learning goals
- Coordinate breathing with running rhythm.
- Use breathing and heart rate to regulate warm-up intensity.
- Keep up a continuous run at a controlled pace.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
In the first minutes many students lose count; run with the group and count out loud. Great before fitness testing or distance-running lessons.
