Reframing Test Stress
After a few slow breaths, students identify a negative thought about tests and turn it into a realistic, useful statement, then share it with a partner. It builds emotional regulation around academic stress and healthier self-talk.
How to play
- Students sit on the floor with their journal and take ten slow breaths led by the teacher, inhaling for 4 counts and exhaling for 6 (1.5 min).
- The teacher models the idea with an example: "I'm going to fail" becomes "If I review two units a day, I'll be ready" (1 min).
- Each student writes down, in one column, two thoughts that pop up before a test (1.5 min).
- In the next column, they rewrite each thought as a realistic, specific, first-person statement (2 min).
- In pairs, each student reads one new statement and the partner helps make it more specific if needed, one minute per person (2 min).
- Wrap-up: the whole group takes three slow breaths while silently repeating their chosen statement (1 min).
Rules
- What you write is private; you only share the statement you choose.
- Partners don't judge or make fun of each other's thoughts.
- New statements must be realistic, not just positive.
- Sit in a comfortable, supported position to avoid back strain.
Variations
Easier
The teacher hands out a list of common thoughts, and students pick and rewrite just one.
Standard
Each student rewrites two of their own thoughts and shares one with a partner.
Harder
Besides rewriting, each student writes one concrete action for the week tied to their statement.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do it in a chair or any comfortable position; the task stays the same.
- Shyness or social anxiety: the student can share in writing by passing the journal instead of reading aloud.
- Writing difficulties: allow drawing or whispering the statement to the teacher.
Learning goals
- Identify thoughts that increase stress before tests.
- Turn negative self-talk into realistic, useful statements.
- Use slow breathing as a tool to manage anxiety.

Teacher tip
This works best in the weeks before finals; never force anyone to share. If a student shows high distress, check in privately and loop in the school counselor.
