Rebuild the Group Photo
One group creates a frozen photo with specific poses and positions; another group studies it for 20 seconds, turns around while the first group scatters, and then must put everyone back exactly as they were. It trains visual memory, attention to detail and teamwork at very low intensity.
How to play
- Form groups of 6 and pair them up: one group is the models and the other is the photographers; any extra group acts as judges.
- The models have 1 minute to set up a frozen photo inside a 12 x 12 ft area: each student picks a spot and a simple balance or stretch pose.
- The photographers study the photo silently for 20 seconds and then turn their backs.
- The models walk away and wait about 15 ft off. The photographers have 90 seconds to put each model back in the right spot and pose using verbal directions only.
- The models check the result: the photographers score one point for each person in the right spot with the right pose.
- Switch roles and play once more, adding details like where people are looking or which hand is on the floor; finish with two deep breaths.
Rules
- Poses must be easy and safe to hold: nobody climbs on anyone.
- Models don't help or correct while the photographers place them.
- Photographers give directions without pushing or physically moving anyone.
- Respect the silent observation time.
Variations
Easier
Groups of 4 with simple standing or sitting poses.
Standard
Groups of 6 with balance or stretch poses and 20 seconds to observe.
Harder
Cut the observation time to 10 seconds and require details like gaze direction or which hand is down.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility can choose a comfortable pose where they are or serve as lead photographer.
- Students who are blind or have low vision can be models and, if they want, explore the final photo by touch with a partner guiding them.
- For students with attention difficulties, give them just one specific classmate to memorize.
Learning goals
- Improve visual memory and attention to body and spatial details.
- Cooperate as a team by splitting up who remembers what.
- Hold balance and stretch poses with control.
Teacher tip
Let the photographers figure out that the winning strategy is assigning each person someone to memorize. If there's a dispute about the result, snap a real photo with a tablet to settle it.
