Read the Rhythm Hoop Hop
Each group gets a row of hoops and a card with a rhythm written in simple notes: quarter note, two eighth notes and a rest. Students turn that rhythm into jumps to the beat of a hand drum. They work on reading rhythms, coordination and timing each jump.
How to play
- Six groups of 4, each with a row of 4 touching hoops on the floor and 10 feet between rows (2 min).
- Code: a quarter note (ta) is a jump into the next hoop, two eighth notes (ti-ti) are two quick hops inside it, and a rest means freeze (3 min).
- Play a slow drum beat and have everyone say and clap one card's rhythm before jumping it (2 min).
- Each group jumps its 4-beat card on the beat, jogs back outside the row, and the next starts when the previous lands in hoop three (5 min).
- Every two minutes, groups rotate cards to try at least three rhythms (4 min).
- Finish: each group writes its own card, performs it, and the others guess the rhythm (4 min).
Rules
- Jump on the drum beat, not before: going fast earns no points.
- Always land with both knees bent and avoid stepping on the hoop's edge so you don't slip.
- Wait outside the row until your teammate has reached the third hoop.
Variations
Easier
Use only quarter notes and rests, a very slow beat and 2-beat cards.
Standard
Use 4-beat cards with quarter notes, eighth notes and rests at a medium drum tempo.
Harder
Add the half note (jump and hold on one foot for two beats) and join two cards into an 8-beat rhythm.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student moves along the hoops in a wheelchair or walking and marks each note with claps or taps on the armrest.
- Visual impairment: use high-contrast hoops and a partner guide who calls out the note before each hoop.
- Fitness level: a tired student can clap the rhythm as the group's "conductor" for one round.
Learning goals
- Read simple rhythm patterns and turn them into jumps and steps.
- Match jumping speed to an outside beat.
- Create an original rhythm pattern and perform it with the body.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 24
- cards: 12
- hand drum: 1
Teacher tip
Make large laminated cards with the word (ta, ti-ti, shh) under each note. If the beat is too fast, jumps get sloppy, so start slower than you think.
