Reach the Cone: The Stretch That Pushes the Mark
Stretching with a personal challenge: from a fixed position, push a small cone a little farther with your hand or foot as the muscle lets go. It works flexibility while comparing only with yourself.
How to play
- Everyone grabs a small cone and finds a spot next to a floor line (1 min).
- Side lunge with the base foot on the line: with the hand on the stretched side, push the cone outward three times, a bit farther each time, holding 15 seconds (2 min).
- Seated with legs straight: push the cone forward with both hands without bending the knees, three slow tries (2 min).
- Standing, hand on the wall: push the cone back with the toes, stretching the hip flexor of the other side, then switch legs (2 min).
- Check where your cone ended up compared to the line, pick it up and add it to the stack (1 min).
Rules
- Push the cone slowly; no bouncing.
- You should feel the stretch, never pain.
- Compare with your own first try, not with others.
Variations
Easier
Two tries per position, no hold at the end.
Standard
Three tries per position with a 15-second hold.
Harder
Chalk-mark the first try and try to beat it on the third while keeping good form.
Adaptations
- Visually impaired students: put a bell inside the cone, or a partner calls out the distance.
- Wheelchair users: do the side and forward reach from the chair using the trunk, with the cone on a bench.
- Students with a leg injury: stretch the healthy side only and do an arm version on the other.
Learning goals
- Stretch gradually and safely.
- See personal improvement over several tries.
- Tell the difference between tension and pain.
Equipment for a class of 25
- small cones: 30
Teacher tip
Stress that the cone's progress is personal; don't rank anyone. Watch for bent knees in the seated stretch, used to cheat for distance.
