Rag Doll Arm: Partner Relaxation Check
Partner contrast relaxation: one student tenses and releases their arms and legs while the other gently moves them to check if they are truly relaxed. Students learn to tell tension from relaxation and to take care of a partner with trust.
How to play
- In pairs with one yoga mat. A lies face up with eyes closed; B kneels alongside.
- Contrast: when B says "squeeze," A tightens the fist and whole right arm to about 70% for 5 seconds; on "let go," A releases all at once and breathes. Repeat twice.
- Check: B holds the wrist and elbow, lifts the arm about 8 inches, and moves it slowly. If A is holding it up, B whispers "still holding" and A lets go more. B lowers it all the way back to the mat.
- Repeat with the other arm and each leg: B lifts the heel about 4 inches and gently rocks the leg side to side.
- B quietly gives A a score from 1 to 3 for each limb: 1 is stiff, 3 is a rag doll. About 3 minutes per student.
- Partners switch, and at the end each pair takes 30 seconds to share which limb is hardest to let go.
Rules
- Never drop an arm or leg; always lower it to the floor.
- Do not touch the neck or head.
- No tickling or joking while your partner is relaxing.
- Talk only in whispers.
Variations
Easier
Work only the arms and keep eyes open.
Standard
Arms and legs with two contrasts per limb and a partner check.
Harder
Skip the tension phase: A relaxes using only breathing, and B checks all four limbs.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do it seated in the wheelchair, with B checking only the arms resting in their hands.
- Touch aversion or autism: the student moves their own arm with the other hand, or the teacher does the check with permission.
- Trouble relaxing or high energy: lengthen each squeeze to 7 seconds to feel the contrast better.
Learning goals
- Feel the difference between muscle tension and relaxation.
- Voluntarily release the muscles of the arms and legs.
- Cooperate carefully and respectfully in a trust task.

Teacher tip
Explain first that many people hold their arm up without noticing, and that is exactly what this trains. Let students choose partners they trust and keep eyes-open as an option.
