Qigong Tapping Self-Massage
A qigong routine where students gently tap their own arms, legs, back, and belly with open palms and loose fists in a set order. It releases muscle tension after exercise and builds awareness of the body.
How to play
- Students stand spread out with room to move their arms, feet hip-width apart, and take three deep breaths (0.5 min).
- Arms: with the right palm, tap from the left shoulder down the inner arm to the hand, then back up the outer arm; three passes per arm (1.5 min).
- Torso: loose fists on the chest, then the back of the hands on the lower back, always gently; 30 seconds per area (1 min).
- Legs: lean forward slightly with bent knees and tap from the outer hip down to the ankle, then up the inner leg; three passes (1.5 min).
- Rub the palms together until warm and rest them over closed eyes for three breaths (0.5 min).
- Stand still with arms hanging, notice the tingling, and quietly name one area that feels more relaxed (1 min).
Rules
- Taps are gentle, like raindrops: they should never hurt or redden the skin.
- Each student only touches their own body.
- Do not tap the neck, head, or spine directly.
- Follow the set order so nobody gets lost.
Variations
Easier
Do arms and legs only, one pass per area.
Standard
Full routine of arms, torso, and legs with three passes each.
Harder
Do the routine with eyes closed, guided only by the teacher's voice.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do the routine seated and skip the lower legs if out of reach.
- Touch sensitivity or autism: allow rubbing instead of tapping and let the student choose the pressure.
- High fatigue: sit on the floor for the arm and torso sections.
Learning goals
- Use a simple self-massage technique to release tension.
- Move through the body in a set, mindful order.
- Recognize how body sensations change after the activity.
Teacher tip
This works great right after an intense game; set the tapping pace with your voice so it doesn't speed up and turn into horseplay.
