How to play
- Everyone dribbles freely in half court; on a clap, change hands and speed (2 min).
- Steal round: protect with your body and off arm while trying to tap other balls away (2 min).
- Shrink the space to inside the three-point line (2 min).
- Final round: count the balls you tap and try to beat your own record (2 min).
Rules
- Touch the ball only, never a body or arm.
- Your off arm shields but never pushes.
- If you lose your ball, do five crossovers outside the line and come back in: nobody is out.
- Stay inside the marked space.
Variations
Easier
Large space, and steals with the weak hand only.
Standard
Half court, then the three-point area, stealing with either hand.
Harder
Everyone must dribble with the weak hand and the space shrinks to the lane.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: play in a sub-area with two classmates who dribble nearby and call out their position.
- Wheelchair users: dribble beside the chair and can only be challenged from the front.
- Students who feel unsure: start outside the game dribbling on the sideline and join when ready.
Learning goals
- Protect the ball with body and off arm.
- Dribble with eyes up to find balls and open space.
- Respect the no-contact rule in a fast-paced game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 30
Teacher tip
This warm-up is very intense, so don't stretch it out. The usual mistake is slapping arms; if you see contact, freeze the game for ten seconds and restate the rule.
