Project Debrief Walk: What Worked and What to Change
After a service session (recess, sports day or an elementary school visit), the class cools down by walking in pairs while answering two debrief questions. The easy walk and final stretches help lower heart rate and organize ideas for the project report.
How to play
- In pairs, walk at an easy pace around the schoolyard; first question: which moment of the session worked best and why? (3 min).
- Switch partners at the whistle; second question while still walking: what problem came up and how was it solved? (3 min).
- Stop in a circle for gentle calf, quad and chest stretches while everyone thinks of one specific improvement (2 min).
- Each student writes one success and one improvement on a card and hands it to the group leader (2 min).
Rules
- The walking pace allows easy conversation: if talking gets hard, slow down.
- Listen without interrupting, and talk about situations, not specific people.
- Hold stretches without bouncing and without pain.
- Cards can be handed in unsigned if someone prefers.
Variations
Easier
One question and the same partner for the whole walk.
Standard
Two questions with a partner switch, stretches and a debrief card.
Harder
Each pair must also suggest a way to measure the improvement next time.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: does the walk with their partner on the flattest path and stretches the upper body.
- Autism or social anxiety: may keep the same partner or answer only in writing.
- Hearing impairment: the partner walks alongside to make lip-reading easier, and the questions are shown on a card.
Learning goals
- Reflect on one's own performance in a service-learning project.
- Identify successes and specific improvements.
- Support recovery after the session with easy walking and stretching.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 30
Teacher tip
Collect the cards and read them before the next planning session: problems often show up that the group does not mention out loud. If there was an incident, deal with it separately, not during the walk.
