Progress Podium: Medals for Technical Improvement
A walking cool-down where each student awards sticky-note medals to classmates for specific technical improvements, not results. It puts the focus on process and peer recognition.

How to play
- Recovery walk around the track while everyone thinks of two classmates who improved something specific this unit (2 min).
- Write: each note gets the name and the exact technical improvement (for example, "You don't look at the board at takeoff anymore") (2 min).
- Hand out: while walking, stick the note on the classmate's back or hand and tell them quietly (2 min).
- Podium: three volunteers read the medal they liked getting most and why (2 min).
Rules
- Medals are about technique or attitude, never about bodies or looks.
- Nobody goes without a medal: the teacher keeps an eye out and fills any gaps.
- "Good job" doesn't count: be specific.
- Listen quietly to whoever is reading.
Variations
Easier
The teacher hands out sentence-starter cards.
Standard
Free notes with one specific technical improvement.
Harder
Each medal also includes a suggestion for the next step.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: the medal is said out loud and handed over.
- Difficulty writing: dictate to a classmate or record a short voice note.
- Shy students: may hand over the note silently and skip the podium reading.
Learning goals
- Recognize technical progress in others.
- Value improvement over results.
- Give specific, respectful feedback.
Equipment for a class of 25
- sticky notes: 60
- markers: 10
Teacher tip
Glance over the notes so nobody gets left out; it often happens to students who've missed class. The common mistake is generic messages: give one good and one bad example before starting.
