Pool Noodle Shadow Swings: Hips, Shoulders and a Clear Zone
An individual warm-up using a pool noodle as a bat to loosen the hips, trunk and shoulders. Students also learn to check their clear zone before swinging and to drop the bat safely.

How to play
- Each student sets down a cone and turns with the noodle held out: if it touches anyone, they move apart. That's their clear zone (2 min).
- Mobility: trunk twists with the noodle across the shoulders, shoulder circles and squats with the noodle overhead (2 min).
- Shadow swing in phases on the teacher's count: stance, short stride, hip turn, contact and follow-through (3 min).
- Swing from the other side, lefty or righty, to balance the body (1 min).
- On the whistle, "drop the bat": let the noodle fall inside your zone and jog five meters toward an imaginary first base (2 min).
Rules
- Check your clear zone with the noodle held out before every set of swings.
- Never throw the noodle: drop it beside your body.
- Nobody steps into someone else's zone during swings.
Variations
Easier
Half swings, trunk turn only.
Standard
Full swing in phases on the count.
Harder
Freeze at the phase the teacher calls and partners correct each other.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: the teacher or a partner guides the motion with a hand on the noodle for the first reps.
- Wheelchair users: seated swings with trunk rotation; the clear zone is measured the same way from the chair.
- Students with lower-back pain: short swings with no forced twist and more shoulder work.
Learning goals
- Loosen the hips, trunk and shoulders.
- Learn the phases of the swing.
- Follow the clear-zone rule and drop the bat safely.
Equipment for a class of 25
- pool noodles: 30
- cones: 30
Teacher tip
No noodles? Cardboard tubes or rolled-up newspaper taped together work. The usual mistake is swinging with the arms only: ask them to finish with the belly button facing the pitcher.
