Pool Noodle Parry and Riposte Partners
Partner technique work in which one fencer attacks along agreed lines and the other deflects the noodle with a parry and answers with an immediate touch. Students build arm-leg coordination, reaction time and the defend-then-attack action.
How to play
- Partners face each other one lunge apart, marked with two flat disc cones. Each has a noodle about 30 in long (2 min).
- Basic parries: the attacker advances and fakes toward the chest on the inside or outside; the defender deflects with a short turn of the arm to that side without retreating. 10 reps, then switch (4 min).
- Parry and riposte: after deflecting, the defender touches the attacker's torso before they can return to on guard. 10 reps, then switch (4 min).
- Open game to 5: the attacker picks a side without warning; the defender scores by parrying and riposting, the attacker by touching without being parried (4 min).
- Switch partners and wrap up: each student says which side is harder to defend (2 min).
Rules
- Attacks are at controlled speed; speed up only when both partners can parry consistently.
- The riposte is a tip touch, never a side swing or a shot at the head.
- Pairs stay at least 10 ft from the next pair.
Variations
Easier
The attacker calls "inside" or "outside" before attacking.
Standard
Open attack to either side with parry and riposte.
Harder
The attacker may fake before the real attack and the defender gets only one parry.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: work seated, with the attacker using only the arm.
- Hearing impairment: start each attack with a clearly visible salute gesture.
- Lower fitness: sets of 6 reps with rest while watching another pair.
Learning goals
- Execute inside and outside parries with short arm movements.
- Link defense and riposte into one smooth action.
- Read an opponent's intentions from their footwork.
Equipment for a class of 25
- pool noodles: 26
- flat disc cones: 26
Teacher tip
Students often make wide parries that leave the body open; keep the noodle tip within shoulder width. Demonstrate in slow motion first.
