Point to the Sound: Where Did the Ball Bounce?
With eyes closed, the class listens for a single ball bounce somewhere in the gym and points to it. It works auditory perception and spatial orientation in complete calm.
How to play
- The whole class stands spread out in the middle of the gym, facing different ways (1 min).
- Everyone closes their eyes. The teacher walks silently and bounces a ball once at some spot; everyone points there without opening their eyes (2 min).
- Open your eyes without lowering your arm and check if you got the direction (1 min).
- Two students take over; they bounce from near and far spots, then two bounces in different places so everyone points to them in order with both arms (2 min).
- Bouncers return the balls to the cart and the group talks about which sounds were easiest to locate (1 min).
Rules
- Nobody walks with eyes closed.
- Bouncers never bounce near anyone's head.
- Total silence so everyone can hear.
Variations
Easier
The bounce is repeated twice and you can turn your body toward it.
Standard
One bounce, and you point without moving your feet.
Harder
Two different balls at once: point with each arm to the one called first.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: replace the bounce with a floor vibration (a stomp), or they act as the bouncer.
- Blind or visually impaired students: play as normal; they're often great locators and can share their strategy.
- Students uneasy with closed eyes: keep them half-closed, looking at the floor.
Learning goals
- Locate sounds in space.
- Stay focused in silence.
- Calm down after intense activity.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 2
Teacher tip
It works better in a gym than in an open schoolyard. Before eyes open, have them freeze their arm: checking is the part they love most.
