Plank Tic-Tac-Toe
Two players face each other in a plank and play tic-tac-toe by placing bean bags with one hand on a grid drawn on the floor. It builds isometric core and arm strength while students think through their moves.
How to play
- Draw 3x3 grids about 60 cm (2 ft) wide with chalk (or tape them indoors), one per pair. Each player has 3 bean bags of one color.
- Players get into a high plank head to head with the grid between them. Practice the position for 1 minute: straight body, hands under shoulders.
- Taking turns, each player places a bean bag in a square with one hand without dropping their knees. Once all 6 bags are down, players move their own bags to an open square until someone gets three in a row.
- Each game lasts up to 40 seconds; if no one wins, it is a tie. Then rest for 20 seconds on your knees.
- After each game, the winner moves up one grid toward the "king's court" and the other player moves down one, so everyone gets new opponents.
- Play about 10 games (10 min), and at the end each student shares how many seconds they can hold a good plank.
Rules
- If your knees touch down or your hips pop up high, you lose your turn.
- Move only one bean bag per turn, with one hand.
- Take the full rest between games.
- If your wrists or back hurt, switch to a forearm plank or a knee plank.
Variations
Easier
Play in a knee plank with 25-second games.
Standard
High plank, 40-second games and rotating opponents.
Harder
Each player must do a shoulder tap with the free hand before moving a bean bag.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays seated at a table or lap tray, lifting a light medicine ball before each move.
- Visual impairment: use a raised grid made with ropes and bean bags with different textures.
- Different fitness levels: each student picks a high, forearm or knee plank, and every game counts the same.
Learning goals
- Hold a stable plank with good body alignment.
- Make quick decisions while sustaining effort.
- Accept the result and switch opponents with good sportsmanship.
Equipment for a class of 25
- chalk: 6
- bean bags: 78
Teacher tip
Circulate and fix sagging hips, the most common mistake. If the outdoor surface is rough, give students a mat or move into the gym.
