Plank Duel: Steal the Cone
Partners hold a plank face to face with a cone between them, complete core activation tasks and, on the signal, race to grab the cone first. It combines core and shoulder strength work with reaction speed.
How to play
- Make pairs of similar size and ability, each with one cone and two yoga mats. Partners hold a high plank face to face, about 2 ft between heads, with the cone in the middle (1 min).
- Round 1, shoulder taps: each student taps the opposite shoulder, alternating hands. When the teacher calls 'Cone!', both try to grab it first; one point to the winner (1 min).
- Round 2, high-fives: partners high-five right hands together, then left hands. On the signal, grab the cone. Rest 20 seconds on the knees between rounds (1 min 30 s).
- Round 3, trick words: the teacher calls similar-sounding words, such as 'comb' or 'cold', and only 'Cone!' counts. Anyone who moves on a trick word gives the point away (1 min 30 s).
- Rotation: the player with more points moves one pair to the right, and rounds 1 and 3 are repeated with the new partner (2 min).
- Add up the points and finish with 30 seconds of wrist mobility (1 min).
Rules
- Grab the cone with one hand only and without breaking the plank position.
- Keep the back straight: anyone whose hips sag can't score on that signal.
- Safety: at least 2 ft between heads, and reach with a long arm instead of leading with the head.
Variations
Easier
Plank with knees down, and the signal comes after a three-second countdown.
Standard
High plank face to face with shoulder taps, high-fives and trick-word signals.
Harder
Forearm plank, and the cone may be grabbed only with the non-dominant hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays seated across from a partner, with the cone on the floor within reach.
- Hearing impairment: the signal is the teacher's arm dropping in plain view, with trick gestures instead of trick words.
- Lower fitness: the student does every round with knees down and rests 30 seconds instead of 20.
Learning goals
- Activate the core and shoulder muscles while holding a plank.
- React to a verbal signal while ignoring similar-sounding cues.
- Compete with good sportsmanship, whether winning or losing points.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 13
- yoga mats: 25
Teacher tip
Pair students by size and strength so the duels stay even. Watch closely for sagging hips and the distance between heads; if you see any risk of bumping, move the pairs farther apart.
