Pioneers Gallery: A Walk with Questions
A calm walk past six posters with real milestones in equality and adapted sport, each with a question for pairs to discuss. It helps students cool down while meeting role models and key moments.
How to play
- Pairs walk past posters taped on the walls; each poster has one fact and one question (1 min).
- Posters: Kathrine Switzer ran the Boston Marathon in 1967 with a race number when women weren't officially allowed; the women's marathon joined the Olympics in Los Angeles 1984; Ludwig Guttmann organized the Stoke Mandeville Games in 1948, the origin of the Paralympics, whose first edition was Rome 1960; goalball was created in 1946 for visually impaired veterans; Billie Jean King won tennis's "Battle of the Sexes" in 1973; artistic swimming added the mixed duet at the 2015 World Championships (6 min).
- At each poster, the pair discusses the question (for example, "Which rule today will seem strange in 50 years?") while walking to the next (2 min).
- Wrap-up: each pair says in one sentence which poster they'd hang in the school hallway (1 min).
Rules
- Walk only, in the direction shown.
- No more than two pairs at a poster at once.
- Talk quietly.
- The questions have no right answer: listen to every opinion.
Variations
Easier
Only three posters with a short sentence.
Standard
Six posters with a fact and a question.
Harder
Each pair adds a new poster for next class.
Adaptations
- Students who use wheelchairs: posters taped at a reading height that works for everyone.
- Low vision or dyslexia: partners read aloud and posters use large print.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: posters have all the text written out and the question highlighted.
Learning goals
- Cool down actively and in order.
- Learn real milestones in equality and Paralympic sport.
- Connect history with sport today.
Equipment for a class of 25
- athlete posters: 6
- tape: 1
Teacher tip
Laminate the posters and keep them: they work for several classes. Common mistake: rushing from poster to poster; signal time per poster with a clap.
