Pilates Basics: Lateral Breathing with a Band
A gentle introduction to Pilates principles: lateral rib breathing with a resistance band around the ribs, neutral pelvis and deep core activation. These basics underpin every later exercise and help students regain postural control after exertion.
How to play
- Seated, each student wraps a resistance band around the lower ribs, crossed in front, and breathes feeling it open sideways (2 min).
- Lying on the back with knees bent: find a neutral pelvis by tilting between posterior and anterior tilt (2 min).
- Deep core activation: on the exhale, gently draw the belly button in without moving the pelvis, eight reps (2 min).
- Heel slides and knee openings while keeping the pelvis still, five per side (3 min).
- Rest with knees to chest and a quick chat about what was hardest to control (1 min).
Rules
- Never hold the breath.
- Don't flatten the lower back into the floor: keep the pelvis neutral.
- Hold bands without too much tension and never let them snap.
Variations
Easier
Only banded breathing and finding a neutral pelvis.
Standard
Lateral breathing, neutral pelvis, deep core and heel slides.
Harder
Add alternating single-leg lifts to tabletop without the pelvis moving.
Adaptations
- Pregnancy or abdominal injury: do only the seated lateral breathing.
- Limited mobility: do the banded breathing and core activation seated in the wheelchair.
- Visual impairment: with permission, a partner places the student's hands on the hip bones to feel neutral pelvis.
Learning goals
- Learn the basic principles of the Pilates method.
- Control lateral rib breathing and a neutral pelvis.
- Consciously activate the deep trunk muscles.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 30
- resistance bands: 30
Teacher tip
Long, light-resistance bands are the most comfortable for the breathing. This lesson sets up a later Pilates unit.
