Pickup with an Audit: Check Every Control Before You Collect It
Picking up controls becomes a calm audit: each trio checks whether its controls were well placed, visible, and safe before removing them. Heart rates come down while walking, and the class leaves with ideas for the next course.

How to play
- Assign zones to trios, each with a map and an audit sheet (1 min).
- Walk to each control: does it match the circle on the map? Was it visible from the natural approach? Was the spot safe? Mark yes or no and add a short note (5 min).
- Pickup: remove the control and its crayon and take them to the box; the trio counts theirs as they hand them in (2 min).
- Share-out: each trio suggests one control to move or improve next time (2 min).
Rules
- Walk, don't run.
- Every control gets logged on the sheet.
- If a control is missing, tell the teacher; don't search outside your zone.
- Equipment is handed in counted.
Variations
Easier
Only check whether the control matches the map.
Standard
Audit position, visibility, and safety.
Harder
Also suggest a new map location for every control that could be better.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: gets the accessible zone or the check-in and counting station at the box.
- Visual impairment: a partner describes the location and the student judges safety using guided questions.
- Fatigue or injury: audits from the central area with the map and checks the trio's answers.
Learning goals
- Bring intensity down by walking with a meaningful task.
- Evaluate the quality and safety of a course.
- Take responsibility for shared equipment.
Equipment for a class of 25
- school maps: 10
- audit sheets: 10
- pencils: 10
- boxes: 2
Teacher tip
Keep photos of where each control was originally placed to settle doubts. The typical mistake is rushing the pickup to finish early; the sheet makes them stop at every control.
