Pickleball Doubles Two-Bounce Game
Doubles pickleball with school-friendly rules: underhand diagonal serve, the two-bounce rule at the start of each rally, and the kitchen. Students learn a new net sport, practice moving up to the net together, and keep their own score.
How to play
- Set up four or five courts about 20 × 44 ft with a 3-foot low net and a 7-foot kitchen marked with floor tape; place four students per court, with one court of five that rotates a player in.
- For 4 minutes, explain the rules: underhand diagonal serve with one attempt, one bounce on each side before anyone volleys, and no volleys from inside the kitchen.
- For 5 minutes, practice mini game: play only the serve, return, and third shot, stopping to correct the two-bounce rule.
- For 12 minutes, play to 11: only the serving team scores, and each partner serves until losing a rally.
- At the end, winning pairs rotate one court to the right and the other pairs one court to the left.
- Finish with 4 minutes: ask why the two-bounce rule makes rallies longer and when both partners should move up to the kitchen line together.
Rules
- Always serve underhand, contacting below the waist and diagonally.
- After the serve, the ball must bounce once on each side before anyone volleys.
- No volleying with your feet in the kitchen or on its line.
- Never backpedal; turn your body and shuffle sideways instead.
Variations
Easier
Allow a second serve and play without the kitchen rule.
Standard
Doubles to 11 with the two-bounce rule, the kitchen, and only the serving team scoring.
Harder
Play to 11, win by 2, and both partners must move up to the kitchen line after the third shot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: allow the ball to bounce twice on the student's side and have the partner cover the back.
- Hearing impairment: show the score with fingers as well as calling it out.
- Lower skill level: switch to rally scoring so every rally earns a point.
Learning goals
- Apply the basic rules of pickleball in a doubles game.
- Coordinate moving up to the net with a partner.
- Manage the score and game calls independently and honestly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- paddles: 25
- pickleball balls: 10
- low net: 5
- floor tape: 3

Teacher tip
The three-number score confuses students at first, so post it on a whiteboard or use rally scoring on day one. Store the balls indoors; cold makes them crack.
