Pick-Your-Level Yoga Balances
Three yoga balance poses (tree, dancer, and warrior III) are posted on cards at three difficulty levels, and each student picks a level for every pose. It builds static balance and teaches students to set their own challenge safely.
How to play
- Students on yoga mats in staggered rows; three cards hang on the wall, one per pose, with levels 1, 2, and 3 illustrated (0.5 min).
- The teacher shows tree pose at all three levels: foot at the ankle, foot on the calf, and foot on the thigh with arms overhead; students pick one and hold five breaths per leg (1.5 min).
- Dancer: level 1 with a hand on the wall, level 2 holding the foot without leaning, level 3 tipping the torso forward with the free arm reaching; five breaths per side (2 min).
- Warrior III: level 1 with hands on the wall, level 2 with hands on hips, level 3 with arms reaching forward; four breaths per side (2 min).
- Repeat the hardest pose, moving up or down one level based on how it felt (1 min).
- Finish in child's pose for three breaths, then raise a hand to show which level they chose in the last round (1 min).
Rules
- Everyone picks their own level and doesn't compare with a partner.
- The foot never presses on the knee, always above or below it.
- If you lose your balance, lower the foot, breathe, and start again without rushing.
- Leave open space in front of you for warrior III.
Variations
Easier
Do every pose at level 1 with the wall for support.
Standard
Pick a level for each pose and hold five breaths per side.
Harder
Do the chosen level with eyes closed for the last two breaths.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated version of each pose, raising one arm or leg from a chair.
- Visual impairment: describe each level in detail and always allow wall support.
- Poor balance: stay at level 1 and hold fewer breaths.
Learning goals
- Hold static one-leg balance poses.
- Choose a realistic level of challenge.
- Prevent falls through controlled technique.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 25
- cardstock: 3
Teacher tip
Stress that a solid level 1 beats a wobbly level 3; set the mats near a wall so support is always within reach.
