Pick-Up Sticks With Gym Poles: Lift One, Move None
A giant version of pick-up sticks: the group drops a bundle of poles and removes them one by one without moving the others. It builds fine movement control, patience and fair play.

How to play
- Groups of five with six poles. Students stand in a circle around their own area, well apart from other groups (1 min).
- One student holds the six poles upright in the middle and lets go so they fall in a crisscross pile (1 min).
- Taking turns, each player tries to remove one pole touching only that one. If another pole moves, they put theirs back and the turn passes (3 min).
- Round two: one hand only, and the pole must be lifted from one end (2 min).
- Each group lines its poles up in the cart and shares which trick worked best (1 min).
Rules
- Poles are dropped from chest height, never thrown.
- Only the player whose turn it is moves; everyone else watches with still hands.
- If you see another pole move, say so calmly; the group settles any doubt.
- Nobody steps or sits on the poles.
Variations
Easier
Both hands allowed and touching two poles is OK.
Standard
Remove one pole without moving any other.
Harder
Remove the pole using the tip of another pole, no hands on it.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: play seated, with the group dropping the poles close to their chair.
- Students with low vision: use high-contrast colored poles and a classmate describes where each one lies.
- Impatient students: act as the group judge for one round before playing.
Learning goals
- Control slow, precise movements.
- Bring arousal down after the main part of class.
- Accept mistakes and wait for your turn.
Equipment for a class of 25
- gym poles: 30
Teacher tip
Use light plastic poles and keep groups several meters apart. The usual mistake is grabbing fast: ask them to count to three before moving a pole.
