Photo-O in the Neighborhood: Match the Exact Shot
Groups of three get photos of neighborhood details taken from an exact spot, and they have to find each shot, mark it on the map, and retake the photo from the same angle. It combines urban navigation, sharp observation, and time management.
How to play
- Off-campus rules: a set area with no dangerous crossings, a meeting point, a hard return time, the teacher's phone number on each sheet, and groups that never split up (5 min).
- Handout: each group gets 12 photos and the map. For each photo they find the spot, mark it on the map, and retake the shot from the same angle with a group member in it (3 min).
- Free route through the neighborhood: the group picks the order and manages time to be back before the deadline (30 min).
- Check-in at base: compare the marked spots and the retaken photos. Points for an accurate match, with a penalty for every minute late (7 min).
Rules
- Always cross at crosswalks and obey signals.
- Don't photograph other people, license plates, or inside homes or shops.
- The group stays together; if someone falls behind, you wait.
- Coming back late costs more points than missing a photo.
Variations
Easier
Six photos of very recognizable places and a smaller area.
Standard
Twelve detail photos with a time limit.
Harder
Photos of tiny details (a crack, a tile) with point values based on distance from base.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: an area with curb cuts and photo spots reachable without stairs.
- Visually impaired: photos replaced by audio or tactile descriptions of each spot and a sighted guide partner.
- Anxiety in open spaces: a trusted group and a route closer to base.
Learning goals
- Navigate an urban area using a map and visual landmarks.
- Plan the order of points to manage time.
- Follow traffic safety and privacy rules on an off-campus activity.
Equipment for a class of 25
- photo sheets: 10
- neighborhood maps: 10
- stopwatches: 10
Teacher tip
Take the photos yourself a week ahead and make sure no spot requires crossing busy streets; you'll need signed permission slips. The usual mistake is saving easy photos for last and running out of time.
