Passing Traffic Jam
All pairs move at the same time inside a square and pass their ball without bumping into other pairs or hitting other balls. The space gradually shrinks, forcing students to look up, communicate, and pick the right moment to pass.
How to play
- Form pairs with one ball and mark a 20 x 20 yard square with cones that fits everyone.
- Round one (2 minutes): pairs walk around the square passing from 3 to 4 yards, looking for gaps between other pairs.
- Round two (2 minutes): pass at a light jog; before passing, say your partner's name.
- The teacher shrinks the square by moving the cones to 15 x 15 yards; each pair counts passes with no collisions or crossed balls.
- Round three (2 minutes): on the whistle, each student finds a new partner and keeps playing with the nearest ball.
- Wrap-up (90 seconds): walk and pass while discussing which strategies helped avoid traffic jams.
Rules
- If a pass crosses another ball or a person, it doesn't count, so wait a moment.
- Walk or jog looking forward, never running backward.
- No high passes or passes over other people's heads.
- After a light bump, stop, say sorry, and keep going.
Variations
Easier
Large square and walking passes with a foam ball.
Standard
Square shrinks from 20 to 15 yards with passes at a jog.
Harder
12 x 12 yard square, bounce passes only, or two balls per pair.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: place the student on a fixed side of the square as a station that any pair can pass to.
- Blind or low-vision students: pair them with a guide partner who calls out before each pass and keep fewer pairs nearby.
- Lower fitness: allow walking in every round.
Learning goals
- Track other people and balls to choose the right moment to pass.
- Communicate with a partner using voice and eye contact.
- Cooperate as a whole class so the shared space runs without collisions.
Equipment for a class of 25
- balls: 13
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
If there are lots of collisions, stop and ask how to avoid them: students usually suggest looking before passing on their own. Set the inner cones out ahead of time so you can shrink the square quickly.
