Pass the Phrase: One Slow Gesture Each
In a circle, each person adds a slow, gentle gesture to a shared phrase the whole group repeats, like a memory game. It brings heart rates down and closes the session with a small group dance.

How to play
- Circles of eight, standing. The first person does a slow 4-count gesture and everyone repeats it (1 min).
- The next person adds theirs and the group repeats from the start, all the way around the circle (4 min).
- Final run of the full phrase, even slower, breathing naturally (2 min).
- Each circle says which gesture was hardest to remember and why (1 min).
Rules
- Gestures are slow and gentle, with no jumps or fast spins.
- If someone forgets a gesture, the group reminds them by moving, not talking.
- Every gesture must work standing or seated.
Variations
Easier
Circles of four.
Standard
Circles of eight with the full phrase.
Harder
Every gesture must carry an agreed Laban factor, for example, all in bound flow.
Adaptations
- Blind or low-vision students: whoever adds a gesture describes it in a short sentence while doing it.
- Limited mobility: the whole circle does the phrase seated if that makes it easier to join in.
- Students who struggle with memory: every other gesture can be cued by the person next to them.
Learning goals
- Wind down with slow, controlled movement.
- Work motor memory as a group.
- Create a closing phrase together.
Teacher tip
No equipment or music needed, though a calm track helps hold the slow pace. Gestures tend to speed up; tap a soft clap every 4 counts to hold the pulse.
