Partner Towel Deep Squat Hold
Two students face each other holding a towel and lower together into a deep squat, using each other's counterweight to hold it with heels down. It improves ankle and hip mobility and relaxes the lower back after hard work.
How to play
- Students pair up with one towel; they stand face to face a step apart, feet a bit wider than hips with toes turned slightly out, holding the towel with both hands (0.5 min).
- On three, both lower slowly at the same time, leaning back slightly against the towel, into a deep squat with heels down (0.5 min).
- They hold the position for 30 seconds breathing slowly; with each exhale they let the hips sink a little lower (1 min).
- Still holding the towel, they slowly shift weight toward the right foot and then the left, five times, feeling the ankle mobility (1 min).
- They stand together by pushing the floor away, shake out the legs, and repeat the squat hold two more times (2.5 min).
- To finish, they let go and do a standing forward fold with knees bent and back relaxed for 20 seconds (0.5 min).
Rules
- Both partners go down and come up together on a count out loud.
- Heels stay on the floor; if they lift, don't go as low.
- Safety: nobody lets go of the towel while their partner is down.
Variations
Easier
Lower only to a half squat, or each partner leans on a wall.
Standard
Three 30-second deep squat holds with side-to-side weight shifts.
Harder
Hold for 45 seconds and release one hand from the towel at a time without losing balance.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a wheelchair user works on ankle mobility by sliding the feet back under the chair while the partner holds the towel.
- Visual impairment: the towel lets the student feel the partner's rhythm, and a count is given out loud.
- Fitness level: students who can't keep heels down place a folded towel under them.
Learning goals
- Improve ankle and hip mobility in a deep squat.
- Relax the lower back through a sustained position.
- Coordinate with a partner using counterweight safely.

Teacher tip
Many students won't get all the way down with heels flat: that's normal and a folded towel under the heels fixes it.
