Partner Scarf Swap Toss
In pairs and then in groups of three, students toss their scarves up at the same moment as their partners and catch someone else's, first on a count and then to the beat of the music. It builds hand-eye coordination, timing, and anticipation.
How to play
- Each student has a juggling scarf. First, on their own, they toss it up with one hand and catch it with the other, "clawing" down from above with the palm facing down (2 minutes).
- In pairs, facing each other 5 feet apart: on three, both partners toss their scarves up at the same time and catch each other's.
- After 5 swaps in a row, add a challenge before catching: a clap, a knee tap, or a half turn (3 minutes).
- With slow music playing, pairs swap scarves on the beat you call, for example every 4 counts (4 minutes).
- In groups of three standing in a triangle, all three toss at once and each catches the scarf of the person on their right; then switch direction (3 minutes).
- To finish, each pair or group of three makes up a 3-swap routine and shows it to another group (3 minutes).
Rules
- Each pair keeps to its own space so nobody bumps into others while turning.
- Count out loud so you toss at the same time.
- Toss straight up, not at your partner's face.
- If a scarf drops, pick it up and restart the count, no frustration.
Variations
Easier
Each student tosses and catches their own scarf at the same time as their partner, or partners stand just 3 feet apart.
Standard
Partner swaps at 5 feet with challenges before catching, then to the beat of the music.
Harder
Swap with a scarf in each hand, or toss with the non-dominant hand only.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play the same way seated or in a wheelchair; the partner moves closer and tosses a little higher to give more time.
- Shyness: start with a partner of their choice and show the final routine only to the teacher if they prefer.
- Skill level: bigger scarves fall more slowly for students who need support; advanced students use two scarves.
Learning goals
- Toss and catch a light object using both hands in coordination.
- Sync a toss with a partner and with a beat.
- Create a short routine as a group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- juggling scarves: 30
- music: 1
Teacher tip
Juggling scarves fall slowly, which makes them perfect for students who are afraid of balls. Stress catching from above with the palm down, because it teaches students to anticipate the fall.
