Partner Resistance Strength
In pairs, one student performs a movement while the other provides resistance by hand or with a towel, adjusting the force as instructed. It builds strength safely without weights and teaches responsible communication with a partner.
How to play
- Pair students of similar height and weight with one yoga mat and one towel. Explain the 1-to-5 resistance scale: the worker calls a number and the resister adjusts (2 min).
- Exercise 1, towel row: sitting face to face, one partner pulls the towel to the chest while the other resists, giving way slowly. 10 reps, then switch (3 min).
- Exercise 2, hand chest press: the worker pushes forward from the chest while the standing partner slows the movement. 10 reps, then switch (3 min).
- Exercise 3, lying leg press: the worker pushes the soles of the feet against the partner's hands. 10 reps, then switch (3 min).
- Exercise 4, standing towel side pull: pull to one side while keeping the torso solid. 8 per side, then switch (4 min).
- Short second round of exercises 1 and 2 at resistance level 4, then a 2-minute wrap-up on what resistance level felt right for each student (3 min).
Rules
- The worker is in charge: if they say "less" or "stop," the partner eases off right away, but with control.
- Never let go of the towel suddenly.
- No pushing toward the face or neck, and keep movements slow.
- Keep breathing throughout; don't hold your breath.
Variations
Easier
Only exercises 1 and 2, with a maximum resistance of 3.
Standard
Four exercises with resistance between 2 and 4 depending on the student.
Harder
Add 3-second isometric holds halfway through each rep.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do the row and press seated in the wheelchair with the partner at the same level.
- Shy students or those uncomfortable with touch: every exercise can be done with a towel, no hand contact.
- Lower fitness level: work at resistance 1-2 with extra rest between exercises.
Learning goals
- Build strength in the major muscle groups without special equipment.
- Communicate the desired intensity clearly and respect a partner's limits.
- Control both the lifting and lowering phase of each movement.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 13
- towels: 13
Teacher tip
Pair by size and let students choose a partner they trust, since contact can make some uncomfortable. Do an exaggerated demo of what happens when someone lets go of the towel suddenly so they get the point.
