Partner Merengue: Basic Step and Turns
Students learn the merengue, a dance from the Dominican Republic, with its basic step, a partner hold, and two simple turns, switching partners often. Students work on two-count rhythm, nonverbal communication with a partner, and respectful contact.
How to play
- Spend 2 minutes on where merengue comes from and its 2-count rhythm. Everyone stands and, on their own, marks the basic step: shifting weight from foot to foot in place with soft knees.
- Traveling basic step (4 minutes): forward, back, and to the side, always on the beat of the music.
- Partner hold (4 minutes): in two circles, the inner circle faces out; partners hold hands at waist height and dance the basic step. The lead signals changes with light pressure.
- Follower turn (5 minutes): the lead raises the left hand and the follower turns under the arm in 4 counts; then partners switch lead and follow roles.
- Rotation (7 minutes): every 45 seconds of the song, the outer circle moves one person over; practice everything with different partners.
- 3-minute wrap-up: free dance combining the step, traveling, and turns, and a short talk about what makes dancing with someone comfortable.
Rules
- Contact is hands only and always gentle; no one yanks a partner's arm.
- Everyone takes both lead and follow roles, regardless of gender.
- If anyone is uncomfortable with contact, they dance facing their partner without a hold.
- Keep space so you don't bump into other pairs when turning.
Variations
Easier
Dance facing each other with no hold, mirroring your partner's steps.
Standard
Basic step, traveling, and one partner turn with partner rotation.
Harder
Add a turn where both partners spin at once and a turn with a hand change.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: partner dance from a wheelchair, holding hands while the partner turns around them.
- Autism or shyness: the option to dance without contact and with a trusted partner for the first rotations.
- Advanced students: lead linked turn combinations without losing the beat.
Learning goals
- Keep merengue's two-count rhythm with the basic step.
- Lead and follow a partner with soft, clear signals.
- Learn about and appreciate a popular Caribbean dance.

Teacher tip
Use "lead" and "follow" instead of boy and girl. Frequent rotations cut down on awkwardness and build a good mood; play upbeat music from the first minute.
