Partner Juggling: Passes and Steals
In pairs, students share juggling balls: crossing passes, stealing a partner's cascade, and two-person juggling with one hand each. Students work on shared coordination, a common rhythm, and trust in a partner.
How to play
- Make pairs of similar ability standing face to face about 6 feet apart, with 3 balls each (1 minute).
- Simple pass (4 minutes): each partner holds one ball; on "three," both throw with the right hand and catch with the left, then switch the ball to the right.
- Two-person juggling (5 minutes): standing shoulder to shoulder, each partner uses only the outside hand and together they juggle a three-ball cascade.
- Cascade steal (5 minutes): one juggles a cascade while the partner, facing them, tries to steal the balls at the top of the arc without breaking the rhythm, until they have all three.
- Final challenge (4 minutes): each pair picks its favorite trick and goes for a record of tosses in a row; log the best score.
- Switch partners if time allows and share briefly (1 minute) which signal helped you stay in sync.
Rules
- Passes are underhand in a soft arc, never hard.
- Before each try, count out loud so you start together.
- Each pair stays in its own space without crowding others.
- Respect your partner's level by adjusting the height of your throws.
Variations
Easier
Only passes with one or two balls between partners.
Standard
Passes, two-person juggling, and cascade steals with three balls.
Harder
Every-other passing with six balls between the two partners, the basic club-passing pattern.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: pass while seated across from a partner and do two-person juggling from a chair.
- Hearing impairment: use an agreed head nod instead of a spoken count.
- Lower skill: pair with someone who can cascade, who juggles while the student steals.
Learning goals
- Coordinate throws with a partner while keeping a shared rhythm.
- Adjust pass strength and arc to the other person.
- Communicate with clear signals during a shared task.
Equipment for a class of 25
- juggling balls: 75
Teacher tip
Students need the basic cascade first, so teach it in an earlier lesson. Talking is key: counting out loud makes a big difference.
