Partner Interval Tag-Team Run
In pairs, one partner sprints a short 60-meter loop while the other recovers by walking, and they tag off with a high five for several minutes. Students build speed endurance, practice switching between hard effort and recovery, and work as a team.
How to play
- Set 3 loops of 60 m with cones, each with a 3 m exchange zone and a cup or box of craft sticks beside it (2 min).
- Make pairs and put 4 or 5 pairs on each loop; the second partner of each pair waits in the exchange zone (1 min).
- Round 1 lasts 4 minutes: the first partner runs; on arriving, they high-five the partner, grab one craft stick and walk to recover inside the loop back to the zone.
- Two-minute rest: each pair counts its sticks and plans how to share the effort in the next round.
- Round 2 lasts 4 minutes with the same setup, trying to beat the round 1 total; a very tired runner can ask the partner for one walking lap.
- One-minute rest, then a 3-minute final round where any lap under 15 seconds on the teacher's stopwatch is worth two sticks (4 min).
Rules
- Tag off with a high five inside the marked zone.
- Take only one stick per lap, and only the runner who just finished takes it.
- The recovering partner walks inside the loop so they never cross paths with runners.
Variations
Easier
Shrink the loop to 40 meters and make rounds 3 minutes long.
Standard
Sixty-meter laps in pairs, 4-minute rounds, walking recovery.
Harder
Work in groups of three with one exchange zone, so rest is shorter and each lap must be faster.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student covers a shorter route marked with different colored cones, and the lap is worth one stick just the same.
- Shy students: let them pick a partner and run the first round without counting sticks.
- Higher fitness: add a farther cone so their lap is 80 meters.
Learning goals
- Repeat fast efforts while holding speed.
- Recover actively between efforts.
- Cooperate with a partner by sharing the work fairly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 24
- craft sticks: 300
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
Space the loops apart so nobody crosses paths. If a pair is badly mismatched, let the faster runner take a longer lap instead of switching partners.
