Partner EMOM Workout
At the top of every minute, students start a bodyweight task with a set number of reps; whatever time is left in the minute is rest. Partners alternate minutes, learning how work pace and recovery are connected.
How to play
- Write the 4-minute sequence on the whiteboard: min 1 = 12 squats, min 2 = 8 push-ups, min 3 = 10 lunges per leg, min 4 = 15 crunches. Pair students up with one yoga mat (2 min).
- Explain EMOM: at the start of every minute, do the task and rest for the rest of the minute. If you can't finish before 45 seconds, lower the reps next round (1 min).
- Easy 4-minute trial round to adjust each student's reps.
- Two 4-minute rounds alternating: A works the odd minutes and B the even ones; the resting partner counts reps out loud (8 min).
- 1-minute break, then a final 2-minute round where both partners do squats and push-ups together.
- 2-minute wrap-up: each pair discusses how much rest they had at the start versus the end, and what that says about fatigue.
Rules
- The task always starts on the minute beep, not before or after.
- If form breaks down, lower the reps instead of rushing.
- The resting partner doesn't sit: walk or stretch lightly nearby.
- Space mats so lunges don't spill into someone else's area.
Variations
Easier
3-exercise EMOM with reps cut to two-thirds.
Standard
4-exercise sequence with partners alternating minutes.
Harder
Add a minute of 8 easy burpees and both partners work every minute.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a seated arm and core sequence using the same minute format.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: a large visible or projected timer and a visual cue every minute.
- Lower fitness level: set personal reps after the trial round.
Learning goals
- Build muscular endurance with an interval format.
- Connect work pace with recovery time.
- Adjust training volume to personal fitness level.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 13
- stopwatch: 1
- whiteboard: 1
- music: 1
Teacher tip
Use an interval timer that beeps every minute or a music track that marks the switches so you aren't glued to the clock. Watch who finishes in 15 seconds and who can't finish, and adjust before round two.
