Partner-designed Tabata workout
Each pair designs a 4-minute Tabata block of 8 rounds of 20 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest, choosing balanced bodyweight exercises. Pairs then lead their blocks for the class and are rated on intensity, safety and how many muscle groups they cover.
How to play
- Explain the Tabata method and the design rules: two alternating exercises, one lower body and one upper body or core, no equipment (3 min).
- Each pair writes its block on a card with a sketch, the exercise names and an easier option (5 min).
- The teacher reviews the cards and picks four varied blocks for today (2 min).
- The class performs the four blocks to an interval track; the designing pair demonstrates and cues from the front (four 4-min blocks with 1 min rest between them: 19 min, including leader changes).
- After each block, the class rates the intensity on their fingers from 1 to 5.
- Pairs who did not lead keep their card for next class or turn it in to the teacher (1 min).
Rules
- No jumping over others, no loading the neck and no sudden twisting.
- Every exercise must include an easier option.
- No lying down during the 10-second rest: breathe and get set.
- The leading pair is also responsible for correcting form.
Variations
Easier
Use 20 seconds of work and 20 seconds of rest with low-impact exercises.
Standard
Four 20/10 Tabata blocks designed and led by pairs.
Harder
Each block rotates four different exercises and students log reps per round to see how performance drops.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the pair includes a seated version of every exercise, such as arm circles or band presses.
- Shyness: the pair can lead with the card projected and simply demonstrate without speaking.
- Low fitness level: do the easier option and work 15 of the 20 seconds.
Learning goals
- Design an interval training block using balance and safety criteria.
- Lead a group with clear cues and corrections.
- Sustain high intensity during short efforts with incomplete recovery.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 25
- speakers: 1
- cards: 13
- markers: 13
Teacher tip
Check the cards carefully: students tend to pick burpees and jumps every time. Require at least one core or pulling exercise for balance.
