Partner Counterbalance: Lean Without Falling
In pairs, students try balances where each partner holds the other up by pulling or pushing. It builds the basics of a safe grip and trust in acrosport.

How to play
- Hand-to-wrist grip: each grabs the other's wrist. Facing each other, feet apart, both lean back slowly until the arms are straight (2 min).
- Counterbalance squat: with the same grip, go down and up together without letting go. Five reps, then switch partners (2 min).
- Palm-to-palm push: leaning forward, partners press palms and walk their feet back to form an "A" (2 min).
- Back to back: arms linked, sit down together and stand up together (2 min).
- Challenge: link all four positions without letting go, with a new partner (2 min).
Rules
- Always warn before letting go: "Letting go in 3, 2, 1."
- Hand-to-wrist grip, not interlaced fingers: fingers slip.
- Pair up with someone of similar height.
- If someone loses balance, both bend their knees and go down together.
Variations
Easier
Standing counterbalance and palm push only, no squat.
Standard
All four positions separately, then linked.
Harder
One-arm counterbalance with the free hand on the hip.
Adaptations
- Knee injury: no squats; stays in standing counterbalances with soft knees.
- Visual impairment: the partner describes each step and counts out loud going down and up.
- Nervous students: start with a small lean and increase it only when both say "more."
Learning goals
- Practice the hand-to-wrist grip.
- Feel how two bodies balance each other.
- Communicate before letting go.
Teacher tip
Demo the hand-to-wrist grip yourself with a student: that's the picture they keep. The usual mistake is letting go suddenly while laughing; the "Letting go in 3" rule shuts that down fast.
