Partner Count-to-Three Swap
A classic partner focus game: partners alternate counting from one to three, and each round a number is replaced by a calm gesture such as a clap or a stretch. It builds attention and working memory without moving around.
How to play
- Partners stand facing each other, 3 feet apart. A says "one," B "two," A "three," B "one," and so on for 30 seconds, as smoothly as possible.
- Round 2 (1 minute): "one" is replaced by a clap; keep alternating.
- Round 3 (1 minute): "two" is also replaced by reaching both arms overhead.
- Round 4 (1 minute): "three" is replaced by slowly squatting down and standing up. No numbers are spoken anymore.
- Round 5 (1 minute): each pair invents three calm gestures of their own and teaches them to the pair next to them.
- Wrap-up (1 minute): slow down to slow motion and finish with 2 breaths together.
Rules
- If someone slips, smile and restart from "one"; no one is eliminated.
- Gestures are slow and controlled.
- Talk quietly.
- Squats are done without bouncing and with a straight back.
Variations
Easier
Replace only one number for the whole game.
Standard
Replace all three numbers step by step.
Harder
Play in groups of three counting to five, with five different gestures.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: all gestures use the arms, hands, or head.
- Hearing impairment: play with finger signs instead of voices from the start.
- Autism or shyness: pick a trusted partner, and teaching another pair is optional.
Learning goals
- Stay focused and hold back automatic responses.
- Remember and apply a changing set of rules.
- Coordinate with a partner in a relaxed setting.
Teacher tip
This is a well-known drama game that forces students to refocus after an intense class. If the group speeds up, have them count in whispers.
